How Much Does SEO Cost in Australia?
Real monthly retainer bands, audit and project prices, and hourly rates for SEO in Australia. Plus how to read an SEO invoice and work out whether the spend is actually paying for itself.
Most Australian small businesses pay between $800 and $2,500 a month excluding GST for ongoing SEO. Local SEO for a single-location service business sits at the lower end, around $800 to $1,500. Competitive national or e-commerce campaigns run $3,000 to $8,000 plus. One off audits cost $1,500 to $5,000, and hourly consulting sits at $150 to $300.
What does each monthly SEO price band actually buy?
Price bands are hours in disguise. An agency billing you $1,000 a month is putting five to eight hours of experienced time into your account, or maybe ten hours of junior time. Once you know that, the packaging tells you very little. Ask how many hours and who does them.
Rough guide to the Australian market, all figures excluding GST.
| Monthly spend (ex GST) | Roughly what that is in hours | What it realistically buys | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $500 | 1 to 3 | An automated rank report, a thin blog post, some directory listings. Little strategy, no technical work. | Almost nobody |
| $800 to $1,500 | 5 to 10 | Google Business Profile management, citation cleanup, on-page work across your core service pages, one or two decent articles, monthly reporting on enquiries. | Single-location trades, allied health, small professional services |
| $1,500 to $3,000 | 10 to 20 | All of the above plus multi-suburb or multi-service page builds, ongoing technical fixes, genuine link outreach, quarterly strategy review. | Multi-location or multi-service businesses, competitive metro markets |
| $3,000 to $6,000 | 20 to 40 | A content programme rather than a content trickle, digital PR, conversion testing, dedicated technical resource, national keyword targets. | National service brands, larger e-commerce, finance and legal |
| $6,000 and up | 40+ | A working team across strategy, content, technical and links, usually with in-house counterparts. | Enterprise, aggressive growth or funded businesses |
The bands blur at the edges. A $1,500 account on a fast, well-structured WordPress site will often beat a $3,000 account bolted onto a slow, messy one, because the cheaper account is not paying an ongoing tax on technical debt. That is why we push for a technical pass before anyone starts buying content.
Watch what sits outside the retainer. Copywriting, photography, premium tools, developer time beyond small fixes and any ad management are commonly quoted separately. None of that is dishonest, but a $1,500 quote and a $1,900 quote can end up being the same money once the extras land. Get the inclusions list in writing before you compare.
Why do $299 a month SEO packages usually fail?
Because $299 buys about ninety minutes of anyone competent, and reporting eats half of it. There is no version of that arithmetic where real work happens. We have picked up plenty of clients coming off these plans and the pattern is depressingly consistent.
What you find in the account: an automated PDF pulled straight out of a rank tracker, one 400 word blog post written by someone who has clearly never met your industry, a batch of low quality directory submissions, and occasionally a few paid links from a network that does more harm than good. Nobody has looked at the site structure. Nobody has asked which of your services actually makes money.
Cheap SEO is not a smaller version of good SEO. It is a different product wearing the same name. If your budget genuinely tops out near $300 a month, buy four hours of consulting once a quarter and do the work yourself, or put the money into Google Ads where you can at least see exactly what you bought.
How much does a one off SEO audit or project cost?
A technical audit runs $1,500 to $3,500 depending on site size. A full strategic audit with keyword research, competitor analysis and a twelve month content plan is $3,000 to $6,000. SEO on a rebuild or platform migration is usually $2,000 to $8,000, and it is the best money most businesses spend, because a botched migration can erase years of rankings over a weekend.
Local SEO set up as a one off project (Google Business Profile done properly, location and service pages, citation cleanup, a review process your staff will actually follow) is typically $1,200 to $2,500. That is a sensible starting point if you are not ready for a retainer. You get the foundations and the documentation, and you can bring someone back later.
Be sceptical of a cheap audit. A $299 audit is a crawler export with a cover page on it. A real one involves someone crawling the site, comparing it against what is currently ranking for your terms, and writing recommendations in priority order with effort estimates attached. That is a day or two of skilled work and it gets priced that way.
What do SEO hourly rates look like in Australia?
Freelancers and junior agency staff charge $120 to $180 an hour. Experienced agency SEOs sit at $150 to $250. Independent specialists with a track record in a hard niche will ask $250 to $400, and for a single strategy session they are often worth it.
Offshore rates of $30 to $60 an hour look excellent on a spreadsheet. The maths falls over on revisions, on writing that does not sound Australian to an Australian reader, and on the hours you burn managing it. We are not precious about offshore help and use it ourselves for some production tasks. But strategy and quality control need to sit with someone who knows your market and can be held to account here.
Why does local SEO cost less than national SEO?
You are competing with a dozen businesses in your area instead of several hundred across the country. A plumber in Penrith needs to beat other Penrith plumbers. A national software brand needs to beat everyone. Same kind of work, wildly different volume.
Local SEO is mostly proximity, Google Business Profile quality, review velocity, consistent business details across the web, and a handful of well written service and suburb pages. Six to ten hours a month covers it for most single-location businesses. National and competitive SEO needs a content engine, real digital PR to earn links, and constant technical maintenance, which is where the $4,000 to $8,000 a month figures come from. Our SEO services for Australian businesses page sets out what sits inside a retainer at each of those levels.
Rule of thumb: work out what one new customer is worth to you over three years, then divide your monthly SEO spend by it. If a client is worth $4,000 and you spend $1,200 a month, SEO has to produce roughly one extra customer every three months just to wash its face. If that sounds achievable, the spend is sane. If it does not, fix the offer or the pricing before you fix the rankings.
What is a fair SEO contract length?
Three to six months is fair. Twelve is negotiable where there is a large block of upfront work. Twenty four months with an early termination fee is a warning sign, every time.
The honest argument for a minimum term is that SEO front-loads effort. Months one and two are audit, fixes, keyword mapping and planning, with almost nothing visible to show for it. An agency that can be sacked in week three has an incentive to chase quick vanity wins instead of doing the dull structural work that pays off later.
What that does not justify is a two year lock-in. If an agency needs a contract to keep you, the work is not keeping you. We run month to month after the initial period and hand over logins, documentation and content when someone leaves. Ask any prospective provider two things: what happens to my Google Business Profile and my content if I go, and can I read the exit clause now. You can see how we price and structure SEO retainers before you talk to anyone.
How do you read an SEO invoice?
A good SEO invoice tells you what was done, not merely that something was. You should see named deliverables or hours against tasks, plus any third party costs passed through at cost.
Reasonable line items: technical fixes with the specific issues listed, content written with the page titles shown, link work with the domains named, Google Business Profile management, reporting and account management time. Premium tools, stock photography and paid listings belong on their own line rather than buried in the retainer with a silent margin on top.
The red flag is a single line reading SEO services, monthly, $1,500. That is a receipt, not an invoice. Ask for a monthly work log next to it; any agency actually doing the work already keeps one internally. If they will not provide that detail, you have learned something valuable for the price of one email. There is more on how agency pricing is put together across our costs and pricing guides.
How do you tell whether your SEO spend is returning anything?
Track enquiries, not rankings. Positions are an input; leads and revenue are the output. If your reports only show rankings and traffic, you are being shown the easy number.
Set the measurement up before you start rather than six months in. You want form submissions tagged by source, a tracked phone number so calls get attributed, Google Search Console connected, and GA4 configured with your enquiry form as a conversion. That is an afternoon of work and it changes every conversation you have about SEO afterwards.
Then do the sums. Spend $1,500 a month, get eight organic enquiries, and you are at roughly $187 per enquiry. Close one in four and each new client cost $750 to win. Put that next to what a client is worth and you have your answer without needing anybody’s opinion. Run the same calculation on your Google Ads and you will see quickly which channel deserves the next dollar.
On timing: expect movement in Search Console within eight to twelve weeks, a measurable lift in enquiries somewhere between month four and month nine, and an honest verdict at twelve months. Anything much faster is either a soft market or someone claiming credit for seasonality.
Can an SEO agency guarantee you a number one ranking?
No, and walk away from anyone who offers it. Nobody controls Google’s algorithm and nobody gets advance notice of core updates.
Ranking guarantees generally work one of two ways. Either the guaranteed term is so specific that nothing else could rank for it (your business name plus your suburb plus a service nobody searches), or the guarantee carries conditions that make it unenforceable in practice. Under Australian Consumer Law a claim you cannot substantiate is misleading conduct, and the ACCC has taken a dim view of online marketing providers making exactly these promises to small businesses. A provider worth hiring will talk about likely outcomes, results on comparable sites, and a plan they can defend. They will not promise you position one.
Common questions
Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads?
Per lead, usually yes, but only after twelve months or so. Ads cost you every single click and stop the day you stop paying. SEO costs the same every month whether it produces two leads or twenty, so the cost per lead falls as the work compounds. Most Australian small businesses we work with end up running both: ads for cash flow now, SEO for cost per lead later.
Do I have to pay for SEO forever?
No, but rankings do decay. Competitors keep publishing, Google keeps updating, and a page left alone for two years slowly slides. Plenty of businesses run an intensive six to twelve month push, then drop to a light maintenance retainer of $400 to $800 a month, or step out entirely and come back for a tune-up each year. That is a perfectly reasonable way to manage the spend.
Is there normally a setup fee on top of the monthly retainer?
Often, and it is usually fair. Expect $1,000 to $3,000 excluding GST covering the initial audit, keyword research, analytics and tracking setup, and the first round of technical fixes. Some agencies absorb it into a longer minimum term instead. What is not fair is a setup fee plus a long lock-in plus a cancellation penalty. Pick one of those, not all three.
Does SEO cost more for an online store?
Yes, typically 30 to 60 per cent more than an equivalent service business. Product and category pages multiply fast, faceted navigation creates crawl problems, structured data has to be right for product results, and stock changes constantly break URLs. A small WooCommerce or Shopify store with a few hundred products realistically starts around $2,000 a month excluding GST rather than $1,200.
Can I do the SEO myself and skip the fees?
Some of it, genuinely. Claiming and maintaining your Google Business Profile, asking every happy customer for a review, and writing honest pages about the work you do will get a local business a long way. Where owners come unstuck is technical work, keyword targeting and links. A good middle path is paying for a one off audit and a plan, then executing it yourself with a few hours of support each quarter.
Why do two agencies quote wildly different prices for the same website?
Because they are quoting different amounts of labour and rarely say so. One is pricing eight hours a month of senior time, the other twenty hours of mixed time, and both call it SEO. Ask each for hours, who performs the work, whether content is included, and how many links they expect to earn monthly. The gap usually explains itself in about five minutes.
